2 min read

A cat allergy test measures IgE antibodies in your blood that react specifically to cat allergens. About 1 in 10 people in the Netherlands has a pet allergy, of which cat allergy is the most common. Test yourself at home within 15 minutes.

What Causes Cat Allergy?

Cat allergy is not caused by the fur, but by proteins in cats’ saliva, urine and dander. The main allergen is called Fel d 1. When you inhale this, your immune system can overreact.

Frequently asked questions

How reliable is the cat allergy test?

The Cat Allergy Test from The Tester has a sensitivity and specificity of 98%. This makes the test highly reliable for detecting cat allergy.

Is cat allergy hereditary?

Allergies have a genetic component. If your parents have allergies, you are more likely to be allergic too, although not necessarily to the same allergen.

Can I keep a cat with cat allergy?

That depends on the severity of your allergy. Some people can manage symptoms with medication and measures such as HEPA filters and regular vacuuming.

Are some cat breeds hypoallergenic?

There are no completely hypoallergenic cats. However, some breeds do produce less Fel d 1, such as the Siberian cat or Devon Rex.

What can I do in case of a positive test result?

Consult your GP or allergist for treatment options. These can range from antihistamines to immunotherapy (allergy vaccination).
