Lyme Test after Tick Bite: When to Test and How Does It Work?

2 min read

A Lyme test at home detects antibodies against the Borrelia bacteria, the causative agent of Lyme disease. The test is reliable when taken 2-4 weeks after a tick bite. Results within 15 minutes, easy to perform yourself.

Why a Lyme test is important

Lyme disease is transmitted by tick bites. In the Netherlands, an estimated 1 in 5 ticks are infected with the Borrelia bacteria. Early treatment prevents serious complications to the nervous system and joints.

Note: in more than 50% of cases no red ring (erythema migrans) appears around the bite. A test is therefore conclusive.

When to do a Lyme test?

The ideal test period is 2-4 weeks after the tick bite. This is the incubation period during which your body produces antibodies. Testing too early can give a false-negative result.

How Does the Lyme Test Work?

The test detects IgM and IgG antibodies against Borrelia in a drop of blood from your finger. The testing process:

  1. Prick your finger with the provided lancet
  2. Apply 2 drops of blood to the test cassette
  3. Add 2 drops of buffer
  4. Read the result after 10-15 minutes

Frequently asked questions

How soon after a tick bite can I test?

Wait at least 2-4 weeks. Your body needs time to produce antibodies. Testing too early can give a false-negative result.

What are symptoms of Lyme?

Early symptoms: red ring around the bite, flu-like symptoms, fatigue. Later symptoms: joint pain, neurological symptoms, heart problems.

How reliable is the Lyme home test?

The test has a sensitivity and specificity of 89%. This is comparable to many laboratory tests. If in doubt or positive result, consult your GP.

Can I get Lyme without a red ring?

Yes, in more than 50% of cases no erythema migrans (red ring) appears. Therefore, testing is important even without a visible skin reaction.

What should I do in case of a positive result?

Contact your GP immediately. Lyme is easily treatable with antibiotics, especially if detected early.
