Measuring blood pressure at home: all about home measurements and blood pressure monitors

3 min read

A normal blood pressure is around 120/80 mmHg. With a home blood pressure monitor like the FORA P30 Plus, you can easily and accurately check your blood pressure yourself. This is especially important if you have elevated blood pressure or are taking medication.

Why is measuring blood pressure important?

High blood pressure (hypertension) is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease, stroke and kidney problems. The insidious thing is that you often have no symptoms with hypertension. This is why it is sometimes called the “silent killer”.

Regularly measuring your blood pressure helps to:

– Identify problems early on
– Monitor the effect of medication
– Monitor lifestyle changes
– Provide your doctor with reliable data

How do you correctly measure your blood pressure at home?

1. First rest for 5 minutes
Sit relaxed with both feet on the ground. Do not drink coffee or smoke just before the measurement.

2. Position the cuff correctly
Place the cuff on your bare upper arm, about 2 cm above the elbow.

3. Measure at heart level
Place your arm on the table so the cuff is at heart level.

4. Measure several times
Take 2-3 measurements at 1-minute intervals and record the average.

5. Measure at set times
Measure preferably in the morning and in the evening at the same times.

Frequently asked questions about measuring blood pressure

How often should I measure my blood pressure?

For normal blood pressure, 1-2 times a month is sufficient. With high blood pressure or medication use, your doctor often recommends daily measurements.

Which arm should I use?

Always measure on the same arm, preferably the arm with the highest value. You determine this by measuring both arms.

Why does my blood pressure vary with each measurement?

Blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day. Stress, exercise, coffee and even a full bladder can affect values.

Is a wrist or upper arm blood pressure monitor better?

Upper-arm blood pressure monitors such as the FORA P30 Plus are more accurate and recommended by doctors.

When should I see a doctor?

Contact your doctor if your blood pressure regularly exceeds 140/90 mmHg, or for sudden high values with symptoms.

Can I monitor my blood pressure even with diabetes?

Yes, this is even extra important. Diabetics have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
